Battle Report #4 - Easter Egg Hunt - Page 5

Turn 5 was brief since we were all getting tired. We'd been playing since 4:30 and it was nearly 11:00.
Turn 5

It was past the Eldar player's bedtime so we took over his pieces for him. That didn't go so well since the only person who really understood them was the Tyranid player. He really had no stake in seeing them deployed effectively against his troops and we were all too tired to deal with them so they were eventually just declared nul.
Does anyone know what these things do?

Then the Tervigon succeeded in delivering her payload and the game was decided after that.
The Nids Decisive Move - Major egg delivery

There was a thin chance after the Tau executed her, that they could take the eggs out of the Nid basket.
The Tau eyeing eggs

This gambit relied on the game enduring a few more turns. Although the Tau player was ready to call it a game, the faint hope of this option convinced him to see it through. As fortune would see it, there was a sixth turn.
Turn 6 - Can the Tau pull it off?

The Nid player did several clever moves, including sending in single models from devastated units to block line of sight to his basket. They couldn't both be targeted being from different units and therefore confused the shooting of the Tau player. The Tyranid warrior made it back to the nest as well and chewed up the few Tau waiting to jump in and snatch some eggs. The game did not endure for a seventh turn and so that was it. Almost annihilated, despite concerted efforts of 3 forces, the Nids won!
The entire Nid army - still enough to win...

And I came in second because although the Kroot squad made it into my basket, they didn't get out with the goods.
Another failed egg grab - another turn would have made all the difference

Lessons Learned:

1) Eldar are mean with their magic.
2) My chosen should not be sent off by themselves into the fray. Much too pricey for that role. As I've seen time and time again, my force works better concentrated due to the small number of units.
3) The Tau are nasty in the end game. If I face them again, I will have to prepare for that.
4) Nids. How can they be stopped? It took the combined power of three forces to run them down and they still won.
5) Play the game by the objectives. I got distracted chasing big shiny targets instead of focusing on the eggs, the main objective. What can I say? I love when things go boom! I had hand-picked a fast force and I didn't use their speed once.
6) Raptors. Always die when I send them ahead. I will try not deep striking them in the future. They're fast enough as it is.
7) Custom games are fun. I will have to design more.

Hope you enjoyed reading.

Cheers

Battle Report #4 - Easter Egg Hunt - Page 4

By the end of turn 3, several loose ends were wrapped up. Managed to bump off the Exarch finally but took another wound in the process, bringing me up to 3 wounds. Meanwhile I still had this nasty Trygon and Hive Tyrant to contend with. My Chaos Space Marines were way overwhelmed but that was fine because they were extremely cheap and I use them just to fill my troop slots. They provided a decent distraction that allowed my land raiders to roll away unmolested.
Still the Exarch left

I'm free! But still have these guys in my backyard.

The broken Swooping Hawks were still running away but had one last hoorah before they bid everyone farewell.
Broken Swooping Hawks: Toodle-oo

By this point everyone was conscious of the threat level posed by the Nids, so there was some consolidation with all three armies concentrating firepower on them. I tenderized the Hiva Tyrant a wee bit with one of my lascannons. I also tried to spew goo on the the Tyrant and the Trygon but my spell failed since the Eldar had some anti-magic thing going on. With one wound left, the princess died from the perils of the warp. Then I got to place the Tau crisis suits when they had a deepstrike mishap. Gambling that the Tau commander wouldn't decide I was a better target, I placed him in good shooting range of the Trygon. They succeeded in dusting the Hive Tyrant before he put a few more dents in my land raiders.

The arrival of the Tau in all their glory by deepstrike ensured that several big bugs would go down.
The tau are here!

Turn 4 saw the bloodshed mount.
Turn 4

After disgorging its load of plague marines on the zoanthropes, my first land raider had a choice of targets. In a show of good faith I decided not to target the Tau skimmer and took potshots at the Tervigon which largely failed since she was out of range. My 2nd land raider was more effective since it iced a Zoanthrope. You can still see its buddy in the pic below.
Tau Skimmer or Tervigon?

After he dined on my Chaos Space Marines, I had one chance to cripple the Trygon before he popped my tank. I ripped into him with two sets of Lascannons and heavy bolters and knocked off four wounds. Unfortunately it was still standing. The good news however was that the crisis suits were still there to finish the job.
After finishing lunch (CSMs)the Trygon considers bashing up a Land Raider

Trygon Executioners

The hormagaunts managed to make it to another Tau position, the Tervigon had collected a lot of eggs and was making a rush for the Nid basket and the Tau succeeded in popping the Eldar Falcon, conveniently dropping 2 eggs in my basket.
More lunch for the Nids!

Battle Report #4 - Easter Egg Hunt - Page 3

The next few turns saw most of the deepstrikers coming in, although the Tau were seriously delayed until turn 4. The Nids came first with a nasty Carnifex, but the Eldar dealt swiftly and mercilessly with it. Not sure exactly how they killed it since I don't know their Codex but the Tyranid player was nonplussed.
Looks mean but its just business as usual for an Eldar psycher

Was worth a fair number of eggs, however.

The Eldar dropped in Swooping Hawks who the Nids quickly slaughtered and sent the survivors packin'.

Deepstriking Swooping Hawks

Run Away!

Of course the Nids had more deepstrikers, and I got stuck with it this time, a big ugly Trygon that was intent on dining on my Chaos Space marines. The Hive Tyrant also jumped into the fray and I had nothing to contend with it since my Plague Princess was still tied up with Striking Scorpions.
We have visitors! Trygon Incursion

Bonus! A Hive Tyrant too!

I sent in my Raptors but they scattered deep into the fray, positioning themselves smack dab between the Eldar grav tank, an angry swarm of gaunts + a Tervigon intent on delivering some Easter eggs, and a Tau firing squad. It wasn't pretty but at least their suffering was minimal.

Raptors land: Are you sure this is a good idea, boss?

The tau mopped up the remains of my Chosen with a deepstrike behind my lines. Kroot hounds ripped what was left of my guys to pieces. Sadly I never even got to shoot my lascannons. Maybe next time.

The Chosen' Last Stand - We're overrun!

With the execution of my Raptors and Chosen, my hopes were dim to have any chance of dropping an egg or two in my basket.

Battle Report #4 - Easter Egg Hunt - Page 2

Turn 1 - Tyranids swarm forth!

Turn 1 was not so impressive. The Eldar doomed the Tyranid Warriors but to little effect because nobody shot at them. It was pretty clear from the beginning though that the nids would be a problem. His Hive tyrant made a rush for Nurgle, and the rest of his force fanned out against the Eldar and the Tau.

My plan was to use my chosen to clean out anyone attempting to plunder my basket and use my land raiders and princess to make a brute push through to the basket collecting eggs on the way. In my usual A.D.D. style I forgot my plan completely and got distracted by random events. I was a bit concerned that this enraged Hive tyrant was bearing down on me, so I tried taking some potshots at it with my land raider, to no avail. Instead I should have rolled them forward like I originally planned. My Chosen did well taking out the direct threat to my land raiders from the Tau, popping their Hammerhead from the rear with a deadly salvo of plasma, but that would be about all they'd do for the game. I placed them too far away on their own. They were sitting ducks after that. At the end of Turn 1, the Tau were conspicuously absent from the battlefield as there were only 2 squads of fire warriors.

By turn 2 the Eldar started to dish out the pain but the Tyranid paid back in kind. With a bunch of nasty spells like mind warp the Eldar thinned out the ranks of the Nids advancing on their position. All that remained of the hive guard was a shiny white egg.

Dusted Hive Guard

Eldar Frontline

I began to have newfound respect for the power of the Eldar as I'd never faced them in 40k yet, just Epic. I was annoyed however when a squad of striking scorpions deep striked behind my position and tied up my Plague Princess for the next few turns. My plans were effectively nixed then. Several turns later I succeeded in butchering them all but I paid a heavy price, taking 3 wounds in the process.
Meddling Striking Scorpions!

The troubles of my chosen would start here as the falcon grav tank began to take potshots at them whittling down the squads. They tried firing back but to no effect due to protection wards. The tank was plunked down in my egg basket just to add insult to injury. This would however work in my favour in the next few turns.
Grav Tank harrassing poor defenseless Chosen Chaos Marines

The termagaunts spawned from his tervigon made it to a juicy squad of Tau fire warriors who miraculously put up a pretty good fight. The leader survived to take a few nids with him.

Yum yum, juicy fire warriors with less metal bits to break your teeth on!

Turn 3-4 would get really ugly after that.

Battle Report #4 - Easter Egg Hunt - Page 1

Realising that not everyone might want to commit themselves to a chaotic orgy of destruction dedicated to father Nurgle, I came up with a "cute" scenario involving popping units that drop eggs and then carrying those eggs to your basket. The rules were as follows:

It's a regular 1500 pt battle, annihilation with a twist. Each side
designates 20 models as Easter eggs. When these models die, they drop an easter
egg in their wake. The only way to score points is to collect the Easter eggs
and return them to your basket. The player with the most eggs at the end of the
game wins.

Rules:

1) You get no points for your own Easter eggs
but you can move them anywhere you want, shoot units carrying them, etc...

2) The opposing players designate the location of your Easter egg
basket. It must be outside of any deployment zones.

3) A single model
worth less than 100 pts can only drop 1 egg upon dying. However, from 101-200
pts, the model must be worth 2 eggs, from 201-300 = 2 eggs, 301-400 = 3 eggs,
etc.. One player can only ever give 20 easter eggs total.

4) Models can
pick up Easter eggs in the movement phase by coming into contact with the egg.
This does not interrupt their movement. Thus if a model can move 12", and the
egg is only 6" away, the model can pick up the egg and move another 6". However,
if a model is encumbered in this way, it cannot shoot. It can close assault but
it must drop the egg beforehand and collect it in the next movement phase.

5) Vehicles and walkers can only collect eggs if they can carry troops,
and they can carry as many eggs as they have transport capacity. This means a
rhino which can carry 10 troops can carry 10 eggs. It also means that a rhino
could collect several eggs in the same movement phase if they were all bunched
together.

6) Once a model carrying an Easter egg makes contact with
their own basket, they drop the eggs in and are then unencumbered for the
shooting phase. Opposing factions can steal eggs from other players' baskets by
coming into base-to-base contact with the enemies' basket. To steal an egg from
an opposing player's model, you must destroy the model.

7) The player
with the most Easter eggs in the end phase of the final turn wins the game.

The game had 3 seasons in which certain forces bloomed. Turn 1-2, the springtime of the game, the Eldar flourished, butchering the Nids. The Nids then came into their own in turn 3-4, making a solid push into the ranks of all the armies, and turn 5-6 really belonged to the Tau. Nurgle didn't accomplish much, due to some serious tactical errors I made, but I did get to blast a few big things which was fun. Despite this seasonal theme however, the Tyranids still won due to a power rush with a lot of eggs at the end and Nurgle came in 2nd due to a tank exploding in my basket. Tau and Eldar were tied for 3rd place.

Nurgle Deathguard Scratchbuilt Warhound Goatee

I think I've done the first warhound with a goatee.
He was orginally modelled on the ED209 from Robocop so I finally got around to adding his jutting leg bits. Not sure what they're supposed to be, on the ED209 they are massive pistons but in this case I was thinking huge dislocated bone bits jutting out the rear seemed more appropriate for Nurgle.
Plasma/Pus blastgun looks fabulous all goobered in PC7. I'm working on the rear vents and pus buckets that will fuel the gun.

Battle Report #3: Nurgle Tangles With The Sisters! Page 2

By the third/fourth? turn I wiped out the deepstrikers and had to contend with the Canoness #1 and retinue who rolled up in her busted ride. With the combined force of my Daemon princess vomiting Wind of Chaos on them and my Obliterators blasting away, I wiped out that squad out as well except for #1 herself.

Meanwhile my Chosen rolled forward in the Land raider that was still functioning and spewed out on the Canoness #2. Unfortunately she died from small arms fire long before I could test out the full power of this squad in close assault.

That was effectively the game. I won by a narrow margin but it was still fun to win for once.

I learned that the sisters have some nasty squads (4 multi-meltas?) but they're tissue thin when it comes to close assault and small arms fire.
Again a great game!

Battle Report #3: Nurgle Tangles With The Sisters!

Things are looking up for Nurgle. At the meetup on May 16th, I decided to try out a new strategy using a Grey Knight type loadout. Basically it was a lot of heavy choices and I hung back and waited for the enemy to come to me. It worked pretty well as I actually won this game.

The game was Annihilation with Dawn of War. The first turn was useless for both of us and I forgot to take photos until the 3rd turn. Thus the action is well under way in the photo above.

In turn 2 I popped 2 of his rhinos and blew the weapon off an immolator. My opponent in turn paid me back by trashing one of my land raiders with a deepstrike. Meanwhile my CSM functioned as a distraction as my opponent wasted a sizeable squad on annihilating them when juicier targets were kept further away.
